BASIC FUNCTION
The eyewear consultant assists and educates patients with their selection of eyeglass frames, lenses, and lens enhancements. They are responsible for overseeing all duties in the optical area, including placing orders to maintain inventory, dispensing, and repairs and adjustments for eyeglasses. This position also requires office support and assisting customers with appointments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Evaluate prescriptions in conjunction with the patient’s lifestyle.
- Assists and educates patients with the selection of frames; recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit patient needs.
- Determine patients' current lens prescriptions, when necessary, using lensometers or lens analyzers and patients' eyeglasses.
- Measure patients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.
- Work with labs to know what is and is not available for prescription lenses.
- Verify that finished lenses are ground to specifications.
- Notify patients when eyewear is available for pick-up.
- Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames to adjust eyeglasses to fit patients.
- Instruct patients in how to wear and care for eyeglasses.
- Repairs and adjusts eyeglasses while ensuring patient satisfaction.
- Maintain records of patient prescriptions, work orders, and payments.
- Perform all duties in the optical area, including maintaining inventory, placing order to restock merchandise, returning inventor that is not sold against vendor guidelines, and purchasing against the demand of the practice.
- Perform simple bookkeeping such as collecting all patient balances and co-pays and post accurately.
- Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise; organized and stocked eyeglass displays, clean, dust and keep optical area clutter free.
- Perform regular machine maintenance in accordance with maintenance checklist and reports equipment malfunctions.
- Attends continuing education courses to keep informed of new technology and advances in the optical industry.
17. Assist patient with understanding vision insurance benefits.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
As needed, provide office support by answering incoming calls, scheduling appointments and checking patients in for appointments. This job description is meant to be a guideline for coordinating daily activities; other duties will be performed as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- This position is performed in an office environment and requires periods of sitting or standing that may last one hour or longer, and requires approximately 20% sitting, 60% standing, and 20% walking.
- Physical requirements may include the need to occasionally lift up to twenty-five pounds.
- Job pressures are high for meeting deadlines, working on multiple tasks at one time, and frequent interruptions.
- Occupational requirements for this position include the ability to see, hear, and speak clearly and distinctly.
- The mental ability required is high for reasoning, reading, remembering, writing, and speaking.
- This position requires the ability to work extended or unusual hours to meet the occasional needs of the practice or in an emergency situation.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports to Optical Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY
Skills required of this position include:
- Ability to sell and service eyeglasses and contact lenses with a commitment to provide excellent customer service.
- Problem solving issues may involve patient comfort and satisfaction or dealing with irate or frustrated customers. Problems are resolved by making every effort to provide patient satisfaction while maintaining composure and offering appropriate assistance.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Extremely efficient, organized and resourceful.
- Must be flexible and able to function well in a fast-paced environment with great interpersonal skills to deal with many personalities.
- Strong decision making skills.
- Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires a high school diploma, some college preferred.
